Why Do Lead Acid Batteries Require Long-Term Float Charging?

In critical backup power applications such as UPS systems, telecom networks, emergency power systems, and industrial backup solutions, lead acid batteries are commonly operated under long-term float charging conditions.

 

Unlike ordinary rechargeable batteries that are charged only after use, a UPS lead acid battery or VRLA battery is designed to remain fully charged and ready for immediate power delivery whenever an unexpected power failure occurs.

 

The fundamental purpose of float charging is to keep the battery in a “fully charged standby condition”, ensuring reliable backup performance while maximizing battery service life.

 

Simply put, float charging is a “always ready” operating strategy for backup power systems.

 

1. Compensating for Self-Discharge (Chemical Balance)

 

Even when a lead acid battery is disconnected from any external load, internal chemical reactions continue to occur, causing natural self-discharge.

 

Typically, lead acid batteries may lose approximately 0.5%–1% of their capacity per day, depending on battery type, temperature, and storage conditions.

 

If the charging source is completely disconnected for an extended period, the battery will gradually lose capacity. When a battery remains in a low state of charge for a long time, lead sulfate crystals can form on the battery plates, causing irreversible sulfation.

A controlled float charging current continuously compensates for self-discharge losses, keeping the battery fully charged and preventing capacity degradation.

 

2. Preventing Sulfation and Protecting Battery Plates

 

For VRLA batteries and industrial lead acid batteries, prolonged undercharging or deep discharge is one of the major causes of premature failure.

 

Maintaining the battery at approximately 100% state of charge (SOC) helps prevent the accumulation and hardening of lead sulfate crystals on the negative plates.

 

When the battery remains properly floated, the active materials on the positive and negative plates stay in a stable electrochemical condition, reducing the risk of sulfation.

 

Therefore, float charging is not a method to repair an aged battery — it is a preventive maintenance strategy that protects battery health before problems occur.

 

3. Meeting the Requirements of Uninterruptible Power Systems

 

In applications such as online UPS systems, telecom base stations, data centers, and emergency lighting systems, batteries are not operated as “charge after use” devices.

 

Instead, the UPS battery backup system is normally connected in parallel with the rectifier or charger output bus.

 

Under this configuration:

 

The charger continuously supplies power to connected loads.

The battery remains under float charging.

The battery provides instant backup power during utility failure.

 

In an online UPS system, the battery is always connected to the DC bus, enabling zero transfer time during power interruptions.

4. Maintaining Optimal Electrochemical Activity

 

The typical float voltage for lead acid batteries is around 2.25V per cell (depending on battery design and manufacturer recommendations).

 

Although this voltage is relatively low, it is sufficient to maintain electrolyte activity and keep the active materials — lead dioxide on the positive plate and sponge lead on the negative plate — in an optimal condition.

 

When a sudden high-current discharge is required, the battery can immediately deliver power without requiring a recovery or activation period.
