The requirements of backup batteries for electric utility
27 Aug 2021
Energy storage using batteries is accepted as one of the most important and efficient ways of stabilizing electricity networks and there are a variety of different battery chemistries that may be used. Lead acid batteries are very well established and have been successfully applied for utility energy storage but there are a range of competing technologies including Ni-Cd batteries. With growing demand and an aging infrastructure, innovative and cost effective battery solutions are needed to not just improve power quality and efficiency for utility applications.

Battery types:

Lead acid batteries are capable of long cycle and calendar lives and have been developed in recent years to have much longer cycle lives compared to 20 years ago in conditions where the battery is not routinely returned to a fully charged condition. Advanced lead acid batteries have been used in many systems for utility.
On the other hand, no sulphation associated with nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. No shedding/loss of plate material .The best battery available for abusive or harsh environments.

EverExceed VRLA batteries for utility:

Unilyte Range.

Ni-Cd Batteries for utility:

Self discharge rate:

The self-discharge rate should be quite lower in batteries used for utility. Such as EverExceed Tubular OPzV Range VRLA Battery, the self-discharge rate is <2%/month.

High temperature starting:

Wide operating temperature range is an important factor of batteries used in electric utility. EverExceed manufactures a full range of stationary valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries electric utility which have a wide operating temperature range.

Long life cycles:
Ni-Cd Batteries (nickel-cadmium) are specifically designed to provide exceptionally long life at extreme temperatures. This coupled with the inherent low maintenance requirements make the EverExceed Ni-Cd battery series an ideal choice for utility applications.

EBH and EBL Pocket Plate Range NiCd batteries resist electrical abuse, shock and vibrations and need only basic maintenance. This ensures a low total cost of ownership (TCO) over a life cycle that can last 20 years or more.

Reliable:

Absolute reliability of power supply is required in utility applications. So that the reliability and robust design of batteries ensure an excellent resistance against electrical and mechanical stress, low risk of terminal degradation .

Thermal energy storage:
Thermal energy storage is an important criteria for batteries using in utility sector. Batteries should be fully containerized, nonflammable, compact, reusable over semi-infinite cycles, discharge 100% of the stored energy and do not degrade for more than 20 years.
EcerExceed NiCd and VRLA batteries also become more cost effective for the longer storage duration and larger power and energy needs. EverExceed Tubular plate OPzS batteries are characterized by low maintenance requirements, long service life and excellent capacity performance while operating in high temperature or unstable power network.

Around the world, utilities are facing a number of challenges, they need to increase efficiency, reduce costs, improve environmental performance and maintain reliability as well.
