Reasons for Solar Panel degradation

Although crystalline solar power panels are often sold with 25- to 30-year lifespan guarantees, those 30-year-old modules won’t be performing as well as they did on Day 1. Performance declines as solar cells experience degradation due to unavoidable circumstances like UV exposure and weather cycles. Manufacturers realize this, so solar panels come with a power output or performance warranty that usually guarantees 80% production at 25 years.


Reasons for solar panel degradation:

Light-induced degradation (LID):

LID occurs when the solar panel is first exposed to solar radiation and as a response, the photoconductivity of the panel is reduced. This is considered an ‘adjustment’ stage for the panel, also called ‘initial degradation’, and occurs within the first 1000 hours of operation. Efficiency of the panels in this stage is reduced by 1-3% on average and will stabilize after this.
Potential-induced degradation (PID):

This type of degradation doesn’t always take place, whenever it takes place, it can reduce a panels performance by 30%. PID occurs when different components in a system are at different voltages, for example the solar cell and the frame of the panel, causing a disruption in the voltages. This variance causes voltage leaks, and sub-sequentially reduces a panels power output.

                                                                        

Cheaper panels and less material:
Many manufacturers try to provide solar modules in a cheaper rate by providing less materials. Like, providing thinner frames by reducing the aluminum. As a result, the frame of the modules can be bent due to snow melts and then refreezes on the edge of the modules. Apart from that, also there are so many aspects to provide lesser mechanically robust modules to provide in a cheaper rate.
Thinner busbar:
Solar panels sometimes fail because of busbar solder bond failures. If the ribbon is with a big solder bond, it puts more local stress on the cell and causes them to be more likely to fragile. By reducing the size of those solder bonds, the amount of stress at the point where that ribbon gets connected to the cells can be reduced. With more busbars and more solder bonds, there is a higher probability of solder bond failure. But the importance of one solder bond failure goes down when there are more busbars to pick up the slack.
Flexible panels and installation:

Thinner solar modules are flexible and easy to install but that leads a drawback as well. Since, thinner ones are easy to transport and install, many installers try to transport them with bare hands. That can create micro-crack on the modules, which results degradation.

                                                                          

Aging related degradation:

Naturally, solar modules are exposed to external factors which makes degradation unavoidable. Anti-aging degradation is the natural wear and tear of solar panels. Factors that can cause this include chemical reactions in semi-conductive materials that can cause crystalline hardening, contamination of the cells, shadowing effects and weather cycles.
