How to use UPS power supply to maximize its service life?
16 May 2023

The UPS power supply room should be a room with an empty and anti-static floor. The lightning protection effect should be good. It should be dustproof, moisture-proof and sunscreen. The input voltage should be within the planning. The most reasonable load planning is 30% - 60%. Full load and overload operation will affect the life of UPS. Maintain at least once a year. However, in practice, it is difficult for us to be so considerate, so some UPS maintenance tips are particularly important, such as preventing dust accumulation in the case, maintaining the battery in the power supply on time, etc. These maintenance tips can greatly extend the service life of UPS power supply and reduce the repair costs.

1.Try not to overload. Try to operate within the planning range lower than the extra power, because the overload power operation will not only affect the life of the load products, but also affect the life of the UPS power supply. In general, the load of online UPS should be controlled at 70% - 80%. Be careful. Excessive light load is not good, although it is not as severe as overload.

2.Punctuality maintenance. This is for the storage battery in the UPS power supply. Asthe central component in the UPS power supply, we should maintain it carefully and punctually. Assuming that there is no power failure in the local area for a long time, it is necessary to supply power continuously and punctually (for three months) to discharge the UPS with load. Since it has not been powered off for a long time, you always think it is working normally. In fact, once it is powered off, it can only provide a short delay or even no delay at all. The reason is that the battery is in floating charge for a long time.

3.Check the terminal voltage and internal resistance of each cell battery on time. For 12V cell batteries, it is assumed that when the terminal voltage difference between cells exceeds 0.4V or the internal resistance of cells exceeds 80m Ω during the inspection, the cells should be charged evenly to restore the internal resistance of cells and eliminate the terminal voltage imbalance between cells. When equalizing charging, the charging voltage is 13.5~13.8V. Most batteries with excellent equalizing charge treatment can recover their internal resistance to less than 30m Ω.

4.Reduce the depth of discharge. The service life of the battery is closely related to thedepth of discharge. The lighter the load carried by the UPS power supply, the greater the ratio of its usable capacity to its extra capacity when the mains power supply is continuous. In this case, when the UPS power supply is shut down voluntarily due to the low battery voltage, the depth of battery discharge is deeper.

5.Use the peak power supply to charge the battery. For users who have been powered bylow mains voltage for a long time or have frequent power outages, in order to prevent the battery from being damaged prematurely due to the lack of long-term charging, they should fully use the peak power supply (such as late at night) to charge the battery to ensure that the battery has sufficient charging time after each discharge. Generally, it takes about 10 to 12 hours to recharge the battery to 90% of the additional capacity after it is deeply discharged.
