Air Transport Requirements for Lithium Ion Batteries
11 Jul 2022

Speaking of UN38.3, I believe it will be familiar to those engaged in the lithium battery industry. UN38.3 refers to Section 38.3 of the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria for the Transport of Dangerous Goods specially formulated by the United Nations for the transportation of dangerous goods, referred to as UN38.3. , high and low temperature cycle, vibration test, impact test, 55 ℃ external short circuit, impact test, overcharge test, forced discharge test eight test requirements, in order to ensure the safety of lithium battery transportation. General customers need lithium battery manufacturers to improve reports such as UN38.3 report, appraisal certificate, MSDS and drop test report.

The air transport requirements for telephone pools not only control the safety performance of the product, but also have strict requirements on packaging, appearance labeling and so on. Talk to our partners today about the air transportation requirements for lithium batteries (including cells and battery packs).

Labels and Identification

1. Lithium-ion battery handling labels:

Minimum size: 120×110mm; if the carton is too small, 74×105mm can be used; if it is attached to the top of the box, 120×110mm should be used.

2. Special label for cargo aircraft:

Minimum size: 120×110mm; if this label is attached, it can only take the cargo plane.

3. Basic labeling and marking requirements

In addition to the labeling mentioned above, the following information shall be included:

- Net weight, gross weight and other information.

- If necessary, emergency contacts and contact numbers.

- The pattern, color and size of the label must comply with the requirements specified by the DGR.

- The Dangerous Goods Category Label must be on the same side as the Handling Label.

- If transported by cargo aircraft, the label "Cargo Aircraft Only" must be affixed and affixed to Dangerous Goodsnear the category label.

- When the package size is appropriate, all labels are affixed to the same "Shipping name" label.

- Labels used on packages within an over pack should be clearly visible, otherwise labels on all packages should be

Reproduce on the outside of the over pack. In addition, there must be an "Over pack" mark on the outside of the package.

- Text requirements. English must be used unless the country of origin requires another language. If necessary, you can use

Both Chinese and English; for packages over 30KG, font > 12mm; for packages under 30KG,

The font size should not be less than 6mm; for packages of 5 KG and below, the font size should be selected appropriately.mark.

PI965 main requirements

Lithium-ion battery category division:

Lithium-ion batteries are divided into Section IA, Section IB, and Section II according to power and packing capacity.

1-Section IA standard: battery pack power>100Wh, cell power>20Wh;

2-Section II standard: power <= 2.7Wh, weight per box <= 2.5kg (cell or battery pack); power 2.7 < powerrate<=20Wh, quantity per carton<=8PCS (battery); 2.7

3-Section IB standard: power <=2.7Wh, weight per box>2.5kg (cell or battery pack);

2.7< power <=100Wh, quantity per box>2PCS (battery pack); power 2.78PCS (cell).

UN38.3 requirements

1. All lithium-ion batteries must pass the UN38.3 test.

2. Lithium-ion batteries (IA/IB) classified as dangerous goods require a third-party qualified laboratory test report.

3. Lithium-ion batteries classified as Section II can be tested by internal laboratories, but if required by relevant units, they also need to obtain a test report from a third-party qualified laboratory. For some large battery companies' internal UN38.3 reports, most customers still recognize them.

Weight requirement per carton

1. Section IA: When transported by passenger aircraft, the net weight of each box shall not exceed 5KG; when transported by cargo aircraft, the net weight of each box shall not exceed 35KG.

2. Section IB: No matter whether it is a passenger aircraft or a cargo aircraft, the gross weight of each box cannot exceed 10KG.

3. Section II: Packing according to limited quantity or weight.

Carton Requirements

1. Section IA: UN Class II or above cartons are required, that is, UN I(X) and UN II(Y) cartons can be used.

Packaging code: the material category of the packaging box used, our general corrugated box is 4G

Category: X is class I, Y is class II, Z is class III; lithium-ion battery DG products require class II or class I UN carton

Weight limit: the carton can bear the maximum weight, the packing weight cannot exceed this weight, and the weight must meet the requirements of 5.4. Year of production: The validity period of the carton is 2 years. If the carton with the validity period of more than 2 years is to be reused, it is necessary to re-apply for the packaging performance inspection result sheet.

Test country: China is CN

2. Section IB and II: UN carton is not required, but the carton should be rigid (can pass the 1.2m drop test).

Inner packaging

All lithium-ion battery inner packaging must have anti-short circuit measures (such as single isolation, fixed position, PE bag, etc.); Section IA must prevent current reverse flow (such as protective plate / FUSE and other devices). This requirement is very controversial, because some certification and testing agencies require that each cell must be covered with a PE bag. Battery manufacturers need to increase labor costs and material costs, and customers also complain that it takes labor to remove the bags.
