12 problems that need to be paid attention to when installing UPS (Part-1)
19 Sep 2022

During the installation of a UPS system we need to be careful about some certain factors which can hamper our entire operation and threat the reliability of the system. In this series of technical article we are going to explain 12 major problems that need to be paid attention to when installing a UPS system.  In this article we are going to explain second 6 of the major problems:

7. Use environment

UPS and EPS should not be placed in a humid, dirty, and no air convection environment; small UPS should not be stacked directly on the ground, and there should be pads at the bottom to prevent condensation in the humid machine in spring! Medium and large machines should preferably be placed in a dedicated computer room. A good operating environment (such as less dust, suitable ambient temperature, humidity, etc.) can greatly extend the service life of the machine and various loads of users. When the ambient temperature is above 25°C, the service life of the battery is halved for every 10°C increase! When the ambient temperature is above 30°C, the service life of the machine is halved for every 10°C increase.

8. Ventilation / load bearing safety

The machine should be placed so that the inlet/outlet duct of the machine is not less than 30 cm away from the wall to facilitate the machine to dissipate heat! For batteries equipped with medium and large UPS long-delay models, the load-bearing pressure of the floor should also be considered (international standard: no more than 1,000 kg per square meter for office buildings, and no more than 1,400 kg per square meter for industrial plants). It can be solved by reducing the pressure, generally by setting a large area of steel plates or increasing the number of battery cabinets.

9. Lightning protection needs

For UPS and EPS users in suburban and open areas, due to the lack of high-rise buildings, their power transmission relies on overhead lines, and overhead lines are prone to lightning strikes during thunderstorms. Users should install special high-power lightning protection devices at the input front end of the machine. In order to effectively avoid lightning damage to the equipment and user loads.

10. Installation initial inspection

Before installing the medium and large machine, the door of the machine should be opened to check whether the circuit boards, cables, capacitors, fuses, module screws, wires, mechanical parts, transformers, etc. in the machine are loose or fall off.

(1) The above process is to prevent the machine from causing great vibration during transportation.

(2) If the light is not enough when checking the above process, you must use a flashlight or other light source to check carefully before you can go through the following procedures.

11. Phase sequence requirements

The input wiring of three-phase UPS machines has phase sequence requirements (EPS has no requirements). Connect the mains U, V, W, N to the UPS according to the phase sequence, then connect the ground wire and shake it by hand to see if the wire is loose, and lock it tightly. After confirming the phase sequence of R, S and T, use a multimeter to measure the voltage of U-N, V-N and W-N within the range of 220V±25%, and the frequency is 50Hz±1; turn on the mains input switch of the machine, and then turn on the automatic bypass switch of the machine , if there is a long beeping alarm, the mains input phase is wrong, and the phase should be corrected immediately (arbitrarily exchange two of the input three-phase, if there is no long beeping alarm, the phase is correct).

12. Battery pack connection

After the battery pack is connected, connect the positive and negative connection wires of the battery pack to the positive and negative terminals of the machine. Pay attention to the positive and negative connections of the battery pack and the positive and negative terminals of the machine. and lock. The terminal voltage of the measured battery pack should be approximately: the number of batteries × 13.5V. When the running machine is disconnected from the battery pack, the measured charging voltage when the circuit is open should be: the number of batteries in the same group × (13.6-13.8V).
