Overview of ROHS certification
Sep 13, 2022

The European Union created the RoHS directive for human and environmental protection from hazardous substances and put it into effect on July 1, 2006. In July 2019, the RoHS3 Directive, titled “Directive (EU) 2015/863,” went into full effect and excluded medical devices from the requirements. As of July 2021, the medical device exemption has expired, and additional testing may be required for your materials to prove RoHS compliance, specifically if these products are intended for use in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Element provides expert testing services for the chemicals specified by the RoHS directive and can provide the data and insight necessary for RoHS compliance. The RoHS directive restricts the use of certain hazardous chemicals in electrical and electronic products. Please contact our experts to understand more about the maximum concentration values for each of these restricted substances, how testing is conducted, and the RoHS directive itself. The ten restricted hazardous chemicals are:

Restricted materials

The substances banned under RoHS are lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominateddiphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four different phthalates (DEHP, BBP, BBP, DIBP).

  • Lead (Pb): < 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): < 100 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): < 100 ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): < 1000 ppm
  • PolybrominatedDiphenyl Ethers (PBDE): < 1000 ppm
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): < 1000 ppm
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): < 1000 ppm

The Element Advantage

The RoHS3 Directive was created to ensure the protection of life, human health, and the environment, and our RoHS experts are here to help. At Element, we help our customers ensure RoHS compliance by using various analytical methods to verify levels of the restricted substances and determine concentrations of RoHS substances in test samples.
